Members of a lifeboat crew desperately tried to save the life of a colleague whose car slipped into the sea on Arranmore Island off the Donegal coast on Sunday. Another man in his 30s managed to swim to safety during the incident which happened at Poolawaddy Pier just after 5 am. The deceased was named locally as Lee Early (26), who lived on the island, which has a population of about 450 people.
Mr. Early, who worked on the Arranmore Ferry, volunteered on the island’s RNLI lifeboat, on which his father Jimmy serves as coxswain. Mr. Early died at the scene despite the efforts of the lifeboat crew, whose station is close to the scene of the incident, to resuscitate him.
It is also known in English as Arran Island (not to be confused with the Aran Islands off Galway Bay or the Scottish Isle of Arran). In Irish the island was traditionally called Árainn; the adjective mór (large) was added fairly recently. It was also sometimes called in Irish Árainn Uí Dhomhnaill, meaning the ‘Aran of the O’Donnells’.

THE MAN WHO died after a car slipped off a pier on Arranmore Island has been named as Lee Early.
Another man survived the accident, which occurred at around 5.10 am this morning.
Two men in the car became submerged underwater.
Local sources say the men may have been trying to turn the car on the pier when it slipped into the sea.
A man in his 30s, who has not been named, managed to make it to land.
Early was the driver of the car. A local RNLI volunteer, he was popular and well-known in the small island community.
Local Donegal TD Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher called Early a “respected and hard-working young man”.Calling him “popular”, Gallagher said that he worked on one of the ferries that carry people to and from the island. “His parents are both from the island and they’re a respected family,” Gallagher said. ”A dark cloud descended on west Donegal when the news of his tragic and untimely death broke.” His body has been removed to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post mortem will take place tomorrow. A full Garda investigation into the cause of the tragedy is underway.

He has been named locally as 26-year-old Leigh Early, who was the skipper of the Arranmore ferry.
He was one of two men in the vehicle when it entered the water at Poolawaddy Pier on Arranmore island at about 05:10 local time on Sunday.
The second man, 30, escaped from the car and got to safety, according to gardaí (Irish police).
Councillor Noreen McGarvey said it was her understanding that the driver “went to turn near the pier at Poolawaddy in Arranmore and the car slipped off the pier”.
“It was just a horrendous, tragic accident,” the Fianna Fáil councilor told BBC Radio Foyle.
“The passenger managed to get out of the car but unfortunately the driver just couldn’t get out.”
She said that through his job, Mr. Early met hundreds of people every day and was “such a friendly, vibrant, member of the ferry crew”.
“To wake up this morning and hear this news is absolutely devastating for the close-knit community of Arranmore Island.”
